Doris was a prolific novelist and a member of the Communist Party who fought against nuclear proliferation and apartheid (she was banned from South African for many years). She is British, but she was born in Iran and then primarily grew up in Zimbabwe, where her parents worked as maize farmers. She wrote dozens of books, including some science fiction, but her stories of domestic life are, to me, the most gripping. The Grass is Singing is about a fraught marriage gone awry and how it tragically unfolds in the veld of apartheid South Africa. Also a perfectly repulsive portrait of white feminine rage. Some of the details are just breathtaking: "It was such a lovely, lovely day, with its gusts of perfumed wind, and its gay glittering sunshine. This can be made weeks in advance (so, think of it for next year if you like an aged nog!) For background and a party-sized version of the recipe, go here. 2 large eggs 3 oz (by volume) or 75 grams (by weight) sugar 2 oz añejo tequila (I've used El Jimador in the past) 2½ oz Amontillado sherry 6 oz whole milk 4 oz heavy cream In a blender on low speed, beat eggs until smooth. Slowly add sugar until incorporated and dissolved. Slowly add sherry, tequila, milk and cream. Refrigerate overnight and serve in small chilled cups. Dust with fresh nutmeg before serving. Not much of a drinker? You're in luck - Morgenthaler also has a non-alcoholic version here! Bonus! It's not the holidays without a good hot chocolate recipe. Here's one I've adapted from a French recipe, so you know it'll be nice and rich. 100 g (by weight) dark chocolate (you can use dark chocolate chips, or a dark chocolate bar that's chopped up for easier melting) 20 oz whole milk 2 oz heavy cream 1 1/2 tablespoons of granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract pinch of salt (optional) Slowly warm up the milk in a small pot. Once the milk is steaming (do not bring it to a boil!) add the chocolate chips and whisk until completely melted. Once melted, add in your sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Add the salt too, if using (the salt will make the flavors pop a bit more, but totally optional). Mix until combined. Adjust sweetness to your liking. Serve hot with some marshmellows and/or some whipped cream! Wanna have a little fun with it? Try adding a dash of cinnamon while it's still hot on the stove. Havana Club can be hard to come by in the US due to the embargo, so a balanced white rum will do. Bacardi works, though the family left Cuba during the time of the revolution because they're terrible, but now the rum is union-made. Champagne Socialista 1.5 oz white rum (Havana Club preferably) 3/4 oz fresh lime juice 1 oz simple syrup 2 dashes angostura bitters 6-8 fresh mint leaves 1.5oz prosecco or sparkling wine (Krug is union-made, but any will do!) Combine the first five ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake hard to be sure to break up the mint. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe glass. Top with the sparkling wine and garnish with a fresh mint sprig. It’s about a general who stages a play production in every city that he travels to on his battles. Aira is one of my fave fave fave authors. He’s Argentinian and writes like two books a year and they are always very surreal, unsettling and also calming; always lots of strange things that unfold.
